In the heart of Serian, Sarawak, Malaysia; the Golden Durian Monument stands as a bold and distinctive symbol for the city.
This striking landmark has become a defining feature of Serian, a town with a rich cultural tapestry, primarily inhabited by the Dayak Bidayuh and ethnic Chinese communities.
The Vision Behind the Monument
Located prominently in front of the Roxy Hotel Serian, the Golden Durian Monument is the brainchild of Lee Chin Teck, the Managing Director of Tecktonic & Sons Holdings Sdn Bhd. Lee's vision was to create a unique and eye-catching landmark that would not only capture attention but also enrich the city’s landscape.
Erected at the Piazza Durian Commercial Center, this monumental structure showcases the town's commitment to creativity and local culture.
The Golden Durian stands an impressive four meters tall and five meters wide, constructed from 7.5 tons of concrete.
This substantial and robust design ensures that the monument commands attention and serves as a focal point in the city.
The project, which was completed in October 2019, was not without its challenges, particularly in securing the necessary approvals from local authorities. However, its completion marks a significant achievement for both Lee and the town.
From Concept to Creation
Initially, during the project’s launch in 2017, the monument was planned to be constructed from aluminum imported from China.
However, after consulting with a local artist from Sarawak with expertise in monument design, Lee and his team decided to maintain the aluminum theme but incorporate local elements and adjustments to better reflect the city’s cultural heritage.
A Beacon for Tourism and Local Economy
The Golden Durian Monument has become more than just a visual centerpiece. It serves as a magnet for visitors and a boost for local businesses.
The monument's striking appearance attracts tourists, many of whom stop to take photos, enjoy local eateries, and shop for souvenirs. This influx of visitors has had a positive impact on the local economy, especially for small and medium-sized businesses in the vicinity.
For Indonesian tourists, the monument is often a must-visit spot before they cross the Malaysia-Indonesia Border Crossing (Pos Lintas Batas Negara - PLBN).
The vibrant atmosphere around the monument, with its blend of food, shopping, and cultural experience, makes it a popular destination.
Symbolism and Impact
The Golden Durian Monument is a testament to Lee Chin Teck’s willingness to innovate and challenge conventions. Its design not only reflects a bold departure from traditional landmarks but also highlights the city’s distinctive character.
The monument has become a lasting symbol of Serian, enriching the city’s visual and cultural landscape.
The presence of the Golden Durian Monument has made a memorable impression on all who encounter it. Its unique design and significance contribute to a distinct experience that visitors are likely to remember long after their visit.
This landmark, with its striking appearance and cultural resonance, enhances Serian's identity and offers a compelling reason for people to engage with the city in a new and memorable way.
