BORNEOTRAVEL - Sanggau, Thursday (December 19, 2024) – A vibrant celebration of nature and culture unfolded at the Balai Betomu Hall in Sanggau, where Acting Regent of Sanggau, Suherman, S.H., M.H., officially opened the highly anticipated Durian Contest, Bonsai Exhibition, and Ornamental Plant Showcase.
The event, aimed at promoting the unique agricultural and botanical treasures of Sanggau Regency, highlighted the rich biodiversity of the region, particularly its durian varieties and ornamental plants.
A platform to showcase the local heritage and promote sustainable agricultural practices
In his opening remarks, Suherman emphasized the significance of this event as a platform to showcase the local heritage and promote sustainable agricultural practices. He noted that West Kalimantan, home to an astonishing diversity of durians, holds a unique place in the global durian map. Of the approximately 30 known durian species worldwide, 20 are native to Indonesia, and 18 of these thrive in the fertile lands of West Kalimantan.
“With such incredible natural wealth, Sanggau’s local durians are not just a culinary delight but a source of pride. This event goes beyond identifying the best local durians; it’s about preserving our genetic resources and celebrating the beauty of our natural heritage,” Suherman said passionately.
The event also aims to propel local agricultural products onto the national stage. Suherman revealed plans to submit the top durian varieties from the contest to the Ministry of Agriculture for certification as official local mother trees. Additionally, the exhibition is designed to help farmers and plant enthusiasts establish stronger marketing networks, creating broader opportunities for economic growth.
Suherman took the opportunity to remind the community about the importance of protecting the region’s biodiversity, including its ancestral tembawang forests, which are home to many endemic plants and fruits. “Let’s honor the legacy of our ancestors by nurturing and safeguarding these local treasures. Plant for future generations and cherish what we have as a gift from God,” he urged.
Penjabat Bubati Sanggau (The Acting Regent) also encouraged village heads to play a more active role in organizing the distribution and marketing of local agricultural products, ensuring that farmers can sell their goods with greater ease. He expressed his aspiration for Sanggau to become a “Durian Village,” known for its world-class durians and exceptional flavors.
The event drew the attendance of prominent figures, including Member of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) Paolus Hadi, S.IP., M.Si, Member of Sanggau’s Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) Didi Darmadi, A.Md., as well as representatives from the Sanggau Regency Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) and local subdistrict officials. Heads of various regional government organizations (OPD) also joined to demonstrate their full support for the initiative.
Beyond being a competitive showcase, the event serves as an educational platform, offering farmers valuable insights into the proper care and maintenance of durian trees and ornamental plants. “This initiative is about more than just agriculture; it’s about adding value to our products and lifting the living standards of our farmers and plant enthusiasts,” Suherman elaborated.
The Acting Regent concluded his address with heartfelt gratitude to the event organizers, who worked tirelessly to make the event a success.
“Your dedication and hard work will surely bring long-lasting benefits to the people of Sanggau. May your efforts be rewarded and contribute to the betterment of our community,” he said.
Participants from various districts across Sanggau and neighboring areas enthusiastically joined the contest and exhibition, showcasing their finest durians and ornamental plants. The event not only aims to discover and promote high-quality local durians but also aspires to become an annual tradition, fostering sustainable regional economic development through the exploration of Sanggau’s extraordinary local potential.
