On the evening of May 17, 2024, in Tarakan, Yansen TP welcomed 12 guests from America. They sat in a relaxed atmosphere, sipping tea and coffee.
During their gathering, Yansen TP shared the story of Batu Ruyud, a region that was once unknown..
Batu Ruyud is located in Fe' Milau Village
"Now, just Google it! You'll find many stories about this place. Fifty-four years ago, our parents walked us through here," he explained.
An inscription on one of the tall stones behind them clearly recounts the journey of Samuel Tipa Pada and Ruslen Betung. These two parents from the Tipa Padan family successfully led their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren out of literal and symbolic isolation.
Batu Ruyud is located in Fe' Milau Village, Krayan, Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan. This remote area is known for its pristine natural beauty, rich history, and deep cultural heritage. As part of Indonesia’s border region with Malaysia, Krayan has a distinct character shaped by its indigenous traditions and breathtaking mountainous landscape. Batu Ruyud, in particular, has become a point of interest for researchers, writers, and nature enthusiasts eager to explore its stories and significance.
Batu Ruyud hosted the first-ever Batu Ruyud Writing Camp
From October 24 to November 3, 2022, Batu Ruyud hosted the first-ever Batu Ruyud Writing Camp. Fourteen national writers and photographers came together to immerse themselves in the region’s history, engage with the local community, and document their experiences. The camp provided a rare opportunity for participants to collaborate, exchange ideas, and capture the essence of life in this remote borderland.
Their journey culminated in the publication of Exploring the Borderland’s Mysteries: Batu Ruyud Writing Camp I, Krayan, 2022. This book serves as both a travelogue and a historical record, showcasing the region’s unique cultural and natural landscapes through vivid storytelling and striking photography. Readers are invited to experience the wonder of Batu Ruyud through the eyes of the writers, gaining a deeper understanding of this hidden frontier and its people.
The success of the first Batu Ruyud Writing Camp paves the way for future initiatives. As interest in Indonesia’s border regions continues to grow, there is an opportunity to further highlight and preserve the narratives of places like Krayan. Through storytelling and publication, the camp not only promotes literacy and cultural awareness but also sheds light on the untapped potential of this remarkable region.
